Wake Forest golfer Mimi Rhodes is making her presence known with an outstanding freshman season that saw her win the individual title at Cavalier Match Play last week at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Virginia.
She defeated teammate Lauren Walsh, a standout sophomore, in the semifinals. This year Rhodes has appeared in every event for Demon Deacons and went 2-0 in match play at the Big Four Challenge. This season she has earned four top-25 finishes.
Wake Forest women's golf coach Kim Lewellen had high praise for Rhodes.
"Mimi has been trending in a very good way this spring," Lewellen told Winston Salem Times. "She’s worked exceptionally hard on her game and it’s showing the results. Mimi is a strong match play performer so the format of this (Cavalier Match Play) event really suited her."
Rhodes' contributions have not stopped at match play as she has been a strong contributor throughout the season.
"There are many ways Mimi has contributed to this team on the golf course," Lewellen said. "She is very consistent, always bringing in a good countable score. She has an easy-going personality, lighthearted, which keeps everyone at ease during pressure situations.
"You can tell she’s grateful for the opportunity to be playing at Wake Forest. She always thanks the coaches for taking the team to an event and always tells us how much fun she had on the trip. Her gratitude is contagious."
With Rhodes leading the way, Lewellen believes Wake Forest will continue to collect championships and awards. She says Rhodes' well-rounded skillset can set up the Demon Deacons for future success.
Rhodes' next appearance will be at the ACC Championships, Thursday through Sunday in Greensboro.
