A contractor is scheduled to conduct smoke testing as part of a Sewer System Evaluation Survey at the Salem Parkway and Silas Creek Parkway interchanges in Winston-Salem. The work will take place on Monday, November 25, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting. Although crews, trucks, and equipment will be present on the road shoulder, no lane closures are anticipated. Signage and traffic cones will guide motorists.

This activity is a component of the Hathaway Park area smoke testing project. Utilities employ this method to detect rainwater infiltration into sanitary sewer systems by introducing vaporized liquid-smoke into pipe networks. The smoke used is non-toxic, varies from white to gray in color, has a slight odor but does not leave stains or residue, is safe for humans and pets, and poses no fire hazard.

The city advises residents that visible smoke from building vent stacks or manholes is expected during the testing process. "Do not be alarmed and do not call the Police or Fire Department unless you are sure there is a true emergency."
