The Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS), alongside the city of Winston-Salem and developer McCormack Baron Salazar (MBS), has been granted a $2.5 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Supplemental Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This funding is designated for the redevelopment of the Cleveland Avenue Corridor.

Congresswoman Kathy Manning commented on the project, stating, “The Cleveland Avenue Homes project will revitalize Northeast Winston-Salem by providing high-quality, affordable housing options and enhancing community access to educational opportunities, employment programs, and health care services.” She further expressed her pride in securing this funding in Congress and announced the additional federal support aimed at expanding housing supply and resources for local residents.

Back in 2020, Winston-Salem was awarded a $30 million federal grant under HUD’s CNI program to transform the aging Cleveland Avenue Homes public housing neighborhood. The grant was jointly awarded to both the city and HAWS. With Phase 1 now complete, efforts are being directed towards financing and constructing phases two through five. On July 16, 2024, HUD informed Winston-Salem CNI partners about winning an additional $2.5 million.

Richard Monocchio, HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Public and Indian Housing, presented a ceremonial check for the initiative to the Mayor and City Council on August 14.
