The Environmental Protection Agency has officially set the national standard for PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) in drinking water at 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt). In addition to these two PFAS chemicals, a health advisory index has been established for four additional PFAS substances.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities has been actively monitoring these compounds in their water sources and treated water facilities. According to the utility, all samples taken since August 2022 have shown non-detectable levels of PFAS in the treated drinking water, with none exceeding the new MCL of 4.0 ppt.

"We anticipated these standards and have been proactively monitoring for these compounds in source and treated water at our facilities. Compared to other water systems in the state, local raw water levels have fortunately been very low for these substances," stated a representative from WSFC Utilities.

The utility reassures the public that they will continue to adhere to the new regulations and expects PFOA and PFOS levels to remain below the MCL. They are committed to staying up to date with the latest research and regulatory developments to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.

It is important to note that PFAS compounds are commonly used in various consumer products, and the EPA has indicated that a significant portion of PFAS exposure comes from sources other than water, such as food intake.

For over two decades, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities has consistently met or exceeded federal water quality standards, with the local water distribution system remaining fully compliant with current EPA regulations. Customers are encouraged to access annual water quality reports on the city's website and can contact CityLink for more information or updates on utilities.

The utility's proactive approach to monitoring and compliance underscores their commitment to providing safe and high-quality drinking water to the community, in alignment with the latest EPA requirements.
