Patrice Toney, assistant city manager and former interim city manager in Winston-Salem, is set to take on a new role as town manager for Carrboro starting on May 6. Toney's career transition was confirmed by city officials.
During her tenure with Winston-Salem, Toney held key responsibilities overseeing various departments, including Police, Fire, Emergency Management, Human Relations/Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Housing Development, and Neighborhood Services. She temporarily assumed the role of interim city manager from August to November 2023.
Toney's impactful work in Winston-Salem included managing significant funds, as noted when it mentioned that she "overseen the allocation of nearly $30 million in ARPA housing development funds." She also played a pivotal role in community engagement processes and the implementation of innovative programs like the BEAR Team and the Cure Violence program.
Prior to joining Winston-Salem, Toney gained experience in budget and management, public health, and the library sector while working for Forsyth County. Her career commenced at the Winston-Salem Police Department, reflecting her diverse professional background.
Educationally, Toney holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in local government management from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Additionally, she has furthered her knowledge through an executive education certificate from Harvard University in state and local government.
Toney's upcoming transition to Carrboro marks a significant professional milestone in her career trajectory, showcasing her dedication to public service and local government management.
