The Historic Resources Commission has put together an online tool to help citizens identify sites for the 18 businesses in Winston-Salem that were listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book between 1938 to 1967. Most of the businesses were Black-owned and they all catered to Black customers. None of the buildings remain standing. The story map contains information about the people who owned and ran the businesses, what the businesses looked like, where they were located and what happened to them.

The Green Book became the go-to for the Black traveler during a time when Jim Crow laws prohibited Black people from patronizing many white-owned restaurants, gas stations and other businesses. The story map complements Oasis Spaces: The North Carolina Greenbook Project, an exhibit that Triad Cultural Arts is bringing to Winston-Salem, and which will be on exhibit from Oct. 6 to Nov. 8 at The Enterprise Center, 1922 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27107.
