Senior Center Happenings: Mothers, Daughters, and more!
The month of April continued strong at Senior Services with several activities from which to choose. On April 12, the Coffee and Caregiving group met at the Senior Services Main Campus. This is a caregiver support group that meets twice a month to talk and discuss with one another about different caregiving experiences. This group is led by Services Coordinator, Kelly Sloan.
April also brought several seminars. From Atrium Health, Dr. Holly Jean Coward presented a great seminar titled, “What is Normal Aging (And What Isn’t).” Dr. Coward specializes in Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, and she shared great insight on the world of aging.
Senior Services also celebrated Parkinson’s Awareness Month with a wonderful seminar with Diana Parrish about Parkinson’s disease. Ms. Parrish is from the Parkinson’s Foundation Carolinas Chapter and works diligently to bring awareness to each and every area of the Carolinas. This presentation was insightful and offered encouragement to those that are living with Parkinson’s disease and also offered tidbits to folks that have yet to be diagnosed.
Senior Services held their monthly movie on April 18 followed by Tech Tuesday on April 19. In addition, on April 19, Michelle Ellis, SHIIP Coordinator, held a Medicare Extra Help Seminar at the Davie County Public Library. This was a time for anyone with questions about Medicare to come and learn something new.
April 20 began the new session of A Matter of Balance classes at the Senior Services Main Campus followed with the Senior Book Club Meeting at the Davie County Public Library on April 21.
Meet the Candidates filled the Multipurpose Room at the Senior Services Main Campus where the public was invited to learn more about the following races: Davie County Board of Education, Davie County Clerk of Superior Court, Davie County Commissioners, and Davie County Sheriff. The questions from the audience were excellent, and Senior Services appreciates all the candidates who participated.
On Friday, April 22, Dr. Andrew Rivers held a Dental Seminar and answered any questions regarding dental work that folks in the audience may have had. April 22nd also started the first meeting of Karaoke and Dance! This group meets every Friday at the Brock Campus from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Exercise Room and would love to have you join!
On Monday, April 25, the inaugural “What’s Cooking: Foods, Fads, and Helpful Home Hacks” program began. In this group, participants talked about all things strawberries! First, they washed strawberries three different ways: 1 – regular, cold water; 2 – baking soda water, 3 – salt water. The baking soda water was to remove the pesticides off of the strawberries and the salt water was to remove any kind of worms on the strawberries (food). This activity was really interesting and the participants did not find any worms! Following this activity, the participants then used a strawberry cutter and corer to see if the fad was easier than only using a knife (fad). To finish out the program, everyone made a gnat trap out of apple cider vinegar and dish soap to take home (helpful hack).
On Tuesday, April 26, author, Katy Torney, spoke about the Garret Torney Foundation and her children’s book, Boots, at the quarterly Veteran’s Social. This presentation was informal and interactive in nature and she shared the experience of watching her son go through PTSD after his tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The veterans were served strawberry shortcake, and it was delicious. The next Veterans Social will take place in July.
To conclude April, Senior Services held the Good Health Club where nutrition coordinator, Stacey Southern, talked about different ways to eat healthy. At this meeting, they talked about different ways to make sweet potato chips and tried butternut squash.
To kick start May, Senior Services made DIY Dandelion Bouquets on Monday, May 2! This craft was so much fun, and the participants enjoyed making the bouquets together. Lots of laughter was had together. On Thursday, May 5, the Senior Writing group gathered again and talked about ways to improve their writing techniques. They would love to have more members, so make plans to attend the next group meeting. The Senior Writing Group is held the first Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm.
On Friday, May 6, Davie County Senior Services held their annual Mother Daughter Banquet. This event was wonderful! The room was decorated with hot pink and flowers. The tables were full of mothers with their daughters, daughters in law, step daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and friends. Over 100 ladies attended this event and enjoyed a wonderful meal with entertainment by Mike Hendrix. Mr. Hendrix played the piano while the ladies enjoyed their meal and played “Name that Commercial Tune.” This game ended with a tie for third place, and those teams battled it out with additional clues. To close the program, Mr. Hendrix played “God Bless America” and asked everyone to stand and sing together. It was beautiful!
