Smile, criminals. Somebody is more likely than ever to be watching you.
Lee Garrity, City manager of Winston-Salem, said Wednesday the city is set to move to add cameras.
"We will be aggressively adding cameras,” Garrity said in a recent WFDD news report.
The prime intent is to prevent crime. The City Council approved funding on Monday for the addition of surveillance cameras throughout the city. These will be added to the 367 cameras that are currently scattered throughout the city.
The City is budgeting $600,000 to install and maintain the new security cameras. Most of them will be installed over the next 18 to 24 months.
“As many of you know, we're short police officers,” Garrity said in the report, making the case for more cameras. "We only have, I think, one park ranger at the moment. And they can't cover all those parks. So we will be aggressively adding cameras.”
While it requires an initial outlay, Garrity said the cameras are viewed as a cost-effective crime deterrent in the longer term.
