Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools issued the following announcement on March 2.
March 3, 2022 - Wednesday, March 2 was National Read Across America Day. The day was created to celebrate reading and bring attention to the many wonders of books. It was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading.
Not coincidentally, the day occurs each year on the birthday of children’s book author Dr. Seuss. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading.
The celebration of reading was on full display at Kimberley Park Elementary School. Media Coordinator Yvette Evans was decked out in her "Cat in the Hat" gear. It was a wonderful tribute to Dr. Seuss. But the real eye-catcher was the Kimberley Park Media Center. Ms. Evans decorated the entire area and made it look like a cafe. In fact, it was renamed the "Eagles Nest Cafe" in honor of Kimberley Park's soaring mascot.
Mrs. Evans came up with the idea of a cafe theme to showcase Kimberley Park's first ever "Book Tasting."
"The word tasting is a play on words and meant to give students a 'taste' of what these books are about," said Evans.
Checkered tablecloths covered the normally bare tables and at each seat there was a book, a beautiful placemat announcing the book tasting, and a menu for students to fill out. The menu included things like "appetizer" and a blank space for students to write down the genre of the book. The "dish" would be the title. In the space under "chef," students would write down the author.
The books are part of a huge order recently placed by Kimberley Park to fill their library. The money came from Title I funds and specified that the books must be diverse. There was everything from "The Secret Garden of George Washington," our first President, to a profile and biography of Vice President Kamala Harris. There were books on famous singers and basketball giants.
The entire staff at Kimberley Park joined in the celebration by taking part in what was also "Dress as Your Favorite Book Character" Day. Ms. Meekins, one of the school's literacy coaches, dressed as Dr. Seuss' Thing One. Art Teacher Randy Raines dressed as Willy Wonka.
Staff members also talked about and read their favorite books. It was truly a day to celebrate reading at Kimberley Park!
