Winston-Salem North Carolina issued the following announcement on January 6.
As of January, the Community Development Department is administering a federal program that provides housing and other assistance to people living with AIDS in Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes and Yadkin counties.
The department will oversee disbursement of $701,304 in assistance for the current fiscal year through the Housing Opportunities for People With Aids program. The program, which was established in 1990, provides rental, mortgage and utilities assistance and support services, such as transportation for medical appointments, to low-income individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
Previously, the program was administered in the five-county area by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
The department is partnering with the Positive Wellness Alliance, a community-based AIDS service organization, to distribute the assistance. The alliance had been collaborating with NC DHHS on this program.
David Payne, a program analyst with the Community Development Department, said that the transition to local administration of the program will happen behind the scenes and that current recipients of assistance will not see any difference in how they access the program.
Currently the program serves 338 residents in Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes and Yadkin counties. More information about the program can be found here.
