Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is one of 10 participants in a clinical trial to ascertain if medications used for other diseases would also help COVID-19 patients, the Greensboro News and Record reported.

The study researches whether other drugs are able to neutralize COVID-19 or help repair injuries from the virus on the lungs and other organs, Greensboro News and Record reported in September

The medical center uses a strategy that simultaneously tests several drug treatments, moving the most promising forward while removing the least promising, Greensboro News and Record reported.

“The adaptive design of this trial allows us to constantly analyze the data and learn which drugs are working and which ones are not,” Dr. Clark Files, one of the researchers, said, Greensboro News and Record reported. The goal is to reduce deaths from COVID-19 and also the length of time patients are on ventilators, the researchers said.

Wake Forest is also part of a clinical trial on a possible vaccine for COVID-19.
