City of Winston Salem issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.

Winston-Salem Police Department Notice of Public Information Session and Telephone Comments

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive on March 2, 2020, to verify the Winston-Salem Police Department’s compliance with an international set of law enforcement standards and best practices. This is a voluntary process that welcomes a team of outsiders to review the agency’s policy and procedures, management, internal operations, and support services.

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on March 3, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. The session will be conducted in the Winston-Salem City Hall Council Chambers located at 101 North Main Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

If an individual is not able to attend the public information session but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call 336-773-7993 on March 3, 2020, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Appearances at the public information session are limited to 3 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available in the lobby of the Public Safety Center, 725 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The contact person for the Winston-Salem Police Department is Sergeant S.R. Tuttle via email stuttle@wspd.org.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Winston-Salem Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 22030-2215 or www.calea.org.
