On August 8, 1907, the first professional engineering license was granted to Charles Bellamy in Wyoming. Since then, licensure has grown and professional engineers across the United States have made a commitment to protect public health, safety, and welfare. This year marks the ninth annual Professional Engineers Day on Wednesday, August 7, organized by the National Society of Professional Engineers to honor licensed professionals for their contributions.

Professional Engineers Day aims to ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by encouraging young individuals and professionals to consider careers in engineering. Achieving a PE license after obtaining an engineering degree is considered a significant accomplishment. The professional engineers at WSFC Utilities play vital roles in managing water, wastewater, and solid waste services throughout Forsyth County and beyond.

WSFC Utilities Director Courtney Driver stated: “We provide a critical service for our customers. Imagine your day without clean water or sanitary service or a place to take your trash. Our lives would be totally different. Professional Engineers are the ones who use science and math to design those safe and reliable processes.”

The utilities department expresses daily gratitude for its staff of PEs but offers special recognition on PE Day. These individuals are acknowledged as having reached the peak of their profession:

WSFC Utilities – Deana Donohue, Gordon Dively, Courtney Driver, Todd Lewis, Janice McHargue, and Mike Stover

Professional engineers are also active in various City of Winston-Salem departments:

Engineering – Randy Comer, Wes Kimbrell, Craig Nursey, Fred Royal, and Alan Temple

Stormwater – Joe Fogarty and Todd Love

Transportation – Bobby Croom

Several other engineers at WSFC Utilities & the City of Winston-Salem are working towards PE certification.
