Electric scooters are set to return to Winston-Salem this week, with Lime deploying 200 scooters throughout the city for public use. Lime was chosen as an operator through the city's permit application process, which concluded in April.

The city has been without dockless electric bicycles and scooters since December 2023, when Spin ended its operations. In March, the City Council approved revisions to the Micromobility Ordinance. These changes aim to make the market more financially viable for operators and broaden access to micromobility devices.

Key ordinance amendments include reduced device fees for operators and extended operational hours, allowing scooter use around the clock. Other provisions state that:

- Scooters cannot be used on sidewalks, greenways, in Old Salem, or public parks.

- Scooters are considered vehicles and must adhere to traffic laws.

- Scooters must yield to pedestrians in public rights-of-way.

- Scooters cannot obstruct sidewalks, driveways, or curbside parking.

- Helmet use is encouraged for scooter users.

Rental rates are determined by the scooter company and not subject to city review. Companies are tasked with maintaining their equipment and addressing customer complaints. For customer service regarding Lime scooters, residents can call (888) 546-3345 or email support@li.me.
