The city of Winston-Salem has received a $4.4 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to enhance its public transportation system. This funding will enable the Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) to replace five fixed-route transit buses with new hybrid-electric models. The current WSTA fleet includes 45 hybrid-electric buses, and this addition will help retire older vehicles in favor of more reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly options.

The funds come from the Low-and No-Emission Grant Program, which supports efforts to modernize public transportation systems across the country. The initiative aims to create a greener bus fleet for WSTA's future operations.

This announcement is part of a larger national effort, with approximately $1.5 billion allocated to support 117 projects aimed at improving public transportation in 47 states. Over the past three years, nearly $5 billion has been invested by the FTA in replacing and modernizing transit buses across America. This investment has led to U.S. factories producing over 3,650 new buses using advanced technology developed by American workers.
