The city of Winston-Salem, in collaboration with the City/County Public Art Commission, is set to unveil a mural dedicated to The “5” Royales. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 10 at 1 p.m. on the east-facing wall of Fiddlin’ Fish Brewery located at 724 N. Trade St.
The mural was commissioned by the Public Art Commission and the city of Winston-Salem and painted by renowned artist Elio Mercado, also known as Evoca1. Mercado will be present at the event alongside family members of The “5” Royales band.
Originally known as the Royal Sons Gospel Quintet, The “5” Royales gained national recognition after transitioning to rhythm and blues at Apollo Records' request. They achieved significant success with seven top 10 R&B hits during their career.
In recognition of their contributions to music, The “5” Royales were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. A year later, they were honored with an induction into Winston-Salem’s Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame, marked by a bronze medallion on Cherry Street near the Benton Convention Center.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Big Winston Warehouse owners, Carolina Music Ways, and family members of The "5" Royales invite attendees to join The "5" Royales Roots of Rock 'n' Roll Bash. This event will feature a DJ, dancing, food trucks, and more festivities for those who attend.
