The Winston-Salem Police Department and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities are working collaboratively to address recent larcenies of cast-iron lids on water meter boxes in the areas surrounding Marble Street and Bretton Street.

According to Section 8 of the Winston-Salem Water System Resolution, unauthorized individuals cannot tamper with water meters or any part of the water system. Individuals who partake in this activity are subject to fines for each theft as well as criminal charges.

When meter box lids are stolen, the openings in sidewalks and lawns present a hazard to pedestrians. This also creates a significant expense for WSFC Utilities because these replacement lids are no longer available. Ultimately, the entire meter box must be replaced.

If individuals witness suspicious activity involving a water meter, please report to WSPD by calling 336-773-7700. If a water meter box lid has already been stolen, submit a tip via the WSPD Text-A-Tip Program at 336-276-1717 or file a report online. In addition, notify WSFC Utilities through CityLink using any method at cityofws.org/citylink.
