The remaining closed sections of Second Street are scheduled to open for westbound traffic on Tuesday, June 20. Message boards were put in place this week to inform drivers of the changes coming.

The project to convert First and Second streets to two-way traffic is part of a $2.8 million makeover that voters approved as part of the 2018 bond referendum. First Street is open to two-way traffic from Peters Creek Parkway to Spruce Street. Second Street will be two-way from Peters Creek Parkway to Broad Street. The project also includes new pavement, curb work and signals.

Jeff Fansler, the city’s director of transportation, said that the conversion should slow traffic, make the area more pedestrian-friendly and improve the flow of traffic in and out of downtown.
