The purpose of the Winston-Salem Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy is not to train an individual to be a firefighter but to produce informed citizens, and build long-lasting relationships with residents in our community.

GOALS

• To educate the public through a series of classroom and hands-on courses utilizing the resources and manpower of the Winston-Salem Fire Department.
• To explain the tactics and strategies of firefighting and rescue, along with the dangers and benefits inherent to this type of service.
• To provide insight into the inner workings of the Winston-Salem Fire Department and to better inform the residents of Winston-Salem about the multitude of services that are provided to the community.
• To foster an understanding of the broad spectrum of knowledge, training, and skills that are necessary to be a member of the Winston-Salem Fire Department.
• To better prepare residents of Winston-Salem to react properly in the event of a fire or medical emergency.
• To encourage our Academy participants to return to their organizations, neighborhoods, and families to share information that will develop more safety-conscious citizens.
• To provide an interactive forum for both the Winston-Salem Fire Department and citizens to share information and concerns.

The 2023 Citizens Fire Academy will run from September 5 - September 26, 2023, from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM with dinner served at 6:00; four classroom/hands-on sessions, online training, the opportunity to participate in a fire engine ride-along, and two community events.

The academy is free of charge.
