If you’re driving through the Tar Heel State this week, take care to stay close to the speed limit, particularly between July 18 and 24.

Law enforcement officers will be out in force on speed detection details as part of an effort to raise awareness about speeding and automotive crashes as part of the "Speeding Wrecks Lives" initiative.

“Campaigns like these are key pieces to decreasing crashes, even as we work on more long-term solutions, such as safe road design, safer cars and quality driver education,” Mark Ezzell, director of the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, told FOX 8 News.

The agency is dedicated to reducing the numbers of traffic crashes and fatalities in North Carolina by promoting ways to reduce traffic crashes through a variety of grants and safe-driving initiatives.

The focus on stopping speeders is part of the initiative that is running through Saturday. This campaign is being run in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Last year, 424 lives were claimed in speeding-related crashes in the state, with nearly a quarter of all fatal crashes in 2021 being caused by speeding vehicles, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

“Speeding-related crashes are at all-time-high levels across the country, including North Carolina, and one proven way to prevent speeding is an increased law enforcement presence on the roads,” Ezzell told FOX 8 News, explaining this week’s focus on ticketing those who drive as though speed limits were just suggestions.
