Kimberley Park Elementary's 5th grade students recently became “surgeons” to complete their "order of operations." Students were put into groups to complete different operations from toe to brain surgery, which was the most challenging.
At each surgery, they put an expression down on their answer sheet and evaluated it. Once students completed the equation, they had to go check their answer by getting their organ from "ice" and check their answer by looking on the back of the organ. If their answer was wrong, they had to go back and fix their mistake to save their "patient". Students rotated to complete each surgery.
Mrs. Hyman, 5th grade teacher at Kimberley Park, feels this assignment was a great opportunity for students to find confidence in themselves as well as their classmates or "colleagues".
"It was truly amazing to see the students learning and working together to solve the same equations," said Mrs. Hyman. "The surgical uniform gave them a big dose of confidence and now they LOVE order of operations!"
