High Point University issued the following announcement on October 30.

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 28, 2021 – High Point University faculty and students recently received the following academic and professional awards and recognitions.

HPU Pharmacy Student Wins 2021 CVS Health Minority Scholarship

Ivana Korankyi, a second-year pharmacy student, recently was awarded the 2021 CVS Health Minority Scholarship for Pharmacy Students. The CVS Health Minority Scholarship for Pharmacy Students is a scholarship program launched in 2019 thanks to the generosity of CVS Health in partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).

“I am deeply grateful to CVS Health and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy for this generous scholarship toward my education,” said Korankyi. “With this scholarship, I will be able to take my unique background and continue to transform the lives of others.”

The scholarship program is designed to support and promote a diverse population of student pharmacists by reducing financial barriers for underrepresented minority (URM) students pursuing a PharmD degree. Awardees are selected based on their demonstration of academic success, leadership and commitment to advancing the profession of pharmacy and patient care. Each recipient is awarded a single $8,000 scholarship.

HPU Professor Featured on Educational Podcast

HPU 2 Dr. Shirley Disseler

Dr. Shirley Disseler, associate professor of education and STEM education program coordinator at HPU, was recently featured on a podcast. The Jabbedu Education Podcast is a show that works to bridge the gap between educational research and classroom practice.

Disseler discussed how her “Brick Math Series” is changing how kids and teachers understand the why behind the math. She also talked about motivation, engagement and gender gaps in math along with strategies that motivate math in kids.

“Education is about three things – relationships, rigor and making what you’re teaching relevant to their life,” said Disseler. “For example, we have tools. Teaching kids to use the tools is more relevant than teaching them long division. Long division is something we teach because we did it, not because they need it.”

HPU Professor Elected to Physician Assistant Education AssociationHPU 3 Dr. Linda Sekhon

Dr. Linda Sekhon, founding chair of the Department of Medical Sciences at HPU, was elected President-Elect for the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) at the PAEA Business Meeting on Oct. 15.

The PAEA is the only national organization representing Physician Assistant (PA) educational programs. PAEA works to ensure quality PA education through the development and distribution of educational services and products specifically geared toward meeting the emerging needs of PA programs, the PA profession and the health care industry.

“I am honored to serve in this capacity and very excited about this opportunity,” said  Sekhon. “The profession is exploring several issues over the next year, including diversity and inclusion, doctoral degrees and a name change from physician assistant to physician associate. I believe this is excellent timing for HPU as we launch the Doctor of Medical Science Program in the Fall of 2022.”

Sekhon has served the organization as a facilitator for faculty skills for several years and as a member of the Board of Directors since 2019.

HPU Department of Physical Therapy Participates in Annual ConferenceHPU 4 PT Group

High Point University Department of Physical Therapy participated in the American Physical Therapy Association of North Carolina (APTA-NC) 2021 Annual Conference. Seventeen students, one alumnus and 10 faculty and staff presented their research.

Christy Greenwald, a second-year physical therapy student, from Tucson, Arizona, won third place in the state. She conducted research in collaboration with Michael McDermott, a first-year physical therapy student, and under the guidance of Dr. Nathan Morelli. Her research investigated the link between cognitive decline and falls versus freezing of gait, a common gait disturbance in Parkinson’s disease. She found that cognitive decline was linked to falls, not freezing of gait, which opens a new window for physical therapy intervention.

“It’s an incredible honor to have our research recognized at the APTA North Carolina Annual Conference, especially among such brilliant contenders,” said Greenwald. “This was a goal I never thought I’d reach, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’m very proud to be representing High Point University.”

“I am very proud of the HPU Department of Physical Therapy for the work at the American Physical Therapy Association of North Carolina (APTA-NC) Annual Conference,” said Dr. Jeffrey Taylor, chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. “Students presented their work on original research and case studies of patients that they have treated in the HPU Pro Bono Physical Therapy Clinic, all mentored by HPU faculty. This highlights the impactful experiential learning happening in our department.”

HPU Professor Presented with President’s Award by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training EducationHPU 5 Dr. Jolene Henning

Dr. Jolene Henning, chair of the Department of Athletic Training at High Point University, was presented with the President’s Award by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) at the recent CAATE Accreditation Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Henning, along with her colleagues on the CAATE Peer Review Committee, received the award for their tireless efforts in pivoting the entire CAATE accreditation review process to the online environment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus enabling the CAATE to carry out its critical functions in the program review.

“I am honored to receive this award along with my professional colleagues,” said Henning. “It is a privilege to serve the CAATE and its mission to ensure quality in athletic training education.”

The CAATE President’s Award is presented at the discretion of the CAATE president to recognize and honor an individual who has demonstrated exemplary service and leadership to the CAATE organization and the athletic training profession nationally and internationally. Through this award, the CAATE board recognizes impact and service to the CAATE.
