Carolina University has claimed the conference championship in their first season competing in the NAIA. The team, seeded eighth, secured a narrow 64-62 victory over sixth-seeded Spartanburg Methodist at the Coffin Complex in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Bruins established a strong lead early on, entering halftime with a 38-23 advantage thanks to Chris High's offensive performance. Aundree Polk contributed significantly by securing 10 rebounds in the first half.
Spartanburg Methodist mounted a comeback after halftime, outscoring Carolina 39-26. Bryan Bayonne was instrumental for the Pioneers with 20 points and 14 rebounds, briefly giving his team the lead late in the game. However, Carolina's effective shooting and defense ensured their win in the final moments.
Key performers for Carolina included Chris High with 24 points and six rebounds, Davon Cottle who scored 12 points including three three-pointers, and Aundree Polk who recorded nine points along with 16 rebounds.
Cameron Buchanan made a decisive three-pointer with less than two minutes left to play, which helped secure Carolina's victory as their defense held firm until the end.
Carolina University's achievement as a new NAIA program highlights their determination and ability to overcome challenges. Three players from Carolina were named to the All-Tournament Team: Aundree Polk received Most Outstanding Player honors, joined by Chris High and Dakota Sampson.
Looking ahead, Carolina will represent the CAC in the upcoming NAIA national tournament starting March 14.
