High Point University is looking to turn 100 in a couple of years, and it wants to do so in style by expanding its offerings—hopefully, with minimal growing pains.
In the works are a law school, a school of optometry, a school of nursing, a school of dentistry and a school of entrepreneurship, a recent report on WXII12.com said. But the university's not just growing for the sake of growing.
"There are lots of schools we can start," Nido Qubein, president of High Point University, told WXII12. "We're not on some crazy plan to just start schools. We want our plans to have intentional congruence, and we want to fill the needs of our students and families. Who knows what will come up in the future?"
Under that philosophy, future expansion beyond the current plans hasn't been ruled out either.
Besides widening its curriculum, the university will be upgrading its library system and adding student housing.
The school will be spending $400 million in construction projects to accommodate the new growth, the report said. Its fundraising campaign reached $100 million in the past month with the help of three large donors.
The law and dental schools are the first two priorities and should be functioning when the university turns 100 in 2024, the report said. The other offerings are expected to be up and running a couple of years later.
