Can the Grease to Prevent Sewer Backups

Sewer 1000x667

City of Winston-Salem issued the following announcement on December 22.

As the holiday cooking frenzy begins, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities reminds you to Can the Grease. Everyone plays a part in preventing sewer overflows and backups in their home or business. Running hot water down the drain does not help. Fortunately, it’s as easy as pouring or scraping cooking grease into a can, letting it cool and then tossing in the trash.

Can the Grease - Fats, oil and grease cause approximately 21% of blockages and overflows and can lead to raw sewage in your home. You can protect your home, the sewer system and the environment by never disposing of these hazards down any drain. To learn more and download flyers and coloring books in English and Spanish, visit cityofws.org/grease.

WSFC Utilities maintains and monitors the 1,800-mile wastewater system and 2,300 miles of water distribution mains. Your assistance is crucial to reduce the costly impacts of fats, oil and grease.

It is equally important is to remember No Wipes in Pipes. No matter what the package says, you should never flush wipes of any kind. They do not disintegrate and cause more than 13% of local sewage backups. Throw them in the trash to avoid overflowing sewage in your home and expensive damage to wastewater system pumps.

Visit cityofws.org/nowipes for videos, photos of local wipe blockages and the fatbergs created when grease and wipes combine, flyers to post by your toilets and more.
