Winston-Salem North Carolina issued the following announcement on August 13.
Winston-Salem has now obligated 61 percent of the federal money it received to help low-income residents who are behind on their rent or utilities. Officials will hold another walk-in application event Saturday, Aug. 21, to help more residents apply for the program. The application event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Minnie Lee Davis Harris Recreation Center (formerly the 14th Street Recreation Center), 2020 NE 14th St., Winston-Salem. Staff will be available to assist applicants.
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program provides assistance with rent and utilities, including electricity, water, sewer/wastewater, natural gas, propane and internet. The program is open to all renters in Forsyth County who have been economically impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and have a household income 80 percent or less of area median income, which varies by household size and is $55,100 for a family of four.
Applicants should bring:
Identification for themselves and any co-applicants. (Photo ID is preferred, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID card or passport. Other forms of ID can also be used, including birth certificates, Medicaid or Medicare card, a signed Social Security card or an ID card issued by employer or religious organization/place of worship.)
Proof of income. (Can be pay stubs for the last 30 days, 2020 W-2 form, award letters for SSI, SSDI or child support.)
Their lease agreement.
An eviction notice, or statement or bill from their landlord or utility company showing what they owe.
A letter of termination, or self-written statement of financial hardship.

City and county officials have been making a concerted effort to ensure eligible residents apply for assistance. As of Aug. 12, the city has disbursed or approved $4.1 million, or 61 percent, of the $6.73 million it received from the federal government to assist low-income residents who fell behind on their rent or utilities payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That is up sharply from the $1.1 million disbursed or approved as of June 30. Forsyth County received a separate ERAP allocation of $3.65 million, of which $829,386, or 23 percent, has been disbursed or approved as of Aug. 12. In comparison, on June 30 only $229,957 had been disbursed or approved.
