The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utility Commission has approved increases in water and sewer rates, effective from July 1, following recommendations from an independent rate study. The local water and sewer rates have traditionally been the second lowest among peer utilities within the state, a status expected to continue into the fiscal year 2025-2026.

The comprehensive rate study suggested a 5% revenue increase for the next fiscal year to equitably generate revenue for operating expenses and debt service coverage. This change will result in an average residential customer experiencing a $2.81 increase per month.

In addition to water and sewer rates, the department’s solid waste division will adjust tipping fees to $36 per ton at all landfill and yard waste facilities. Flat rates for smaller loads will remain unchanged. There is also an additional $2 per ton state tax applicable at Hanes Mill Road and Old Salisbury Road landfills.

WSFC Utilities operates without tax revenue funding, relying solely on user fees. The rate increases are aimed at offsetting costs related to necessary capital improvements, personnel expenses, rising operational contract costs, and cash financing of capital equipment.

Courtney Driver, WSFC Utilities Director, emphasized their commitment by stating: “Our top priority will always be to protect public health and the environment. To do that, our staff works around the clock to maintain your services and update critical infrastructure.”
