As temperatures fall, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities is reminding residents and businesses to take steps to prevent frozen pipes. Freezing water can cause pipes to crack or break, leading to flooding and costly repairs.
The utility recommends several measures. Residents should locate their main water supply shut-off valve in case a pipe bursts. Insulating water heaters, pipes, and faucets—especially those in unheated areas—is advised. Outdoor hoses should be disconnected and drained.
A key tip is to allow a slow drip or trickle from an indoor faucet when temperatures drop below 20 degrees. “Do the Drip! This is most important when temperatures drop below 20 degrees. A slow drip or trickle at an indoor faucet can help keep your water running and avoid expensive repairs,” the release states.
Customers are also reminded not to open meter boxes on their own due to the sensitive equipment inside. “Unlike the old analog meters, customers should never open the meter box because the communication device can be easily broken. Your new WaterSavvy smart meter is a high-tech piece of equipment and meter box access is restricted to staff, licensed plumbers & utility contractors. You can face substantial charges for tampering with any component of the water system, including meters and fire hydrants.”
If residents cannot access their shutoff valve during an emergency, they may contact CityLink for assistance with shutting off water at the meter.
Winston-Salem manages extensive infrastructure such as water treatment plants capable of processing up to 91 million gallons daily, along with widespread water mains and sewer lines across its municipal boundaries in North Carolina (https://www.cityofws.org/). The city provides various public services and governance functions through its council structure, which includes eight ward representatives and a mayor elected citywide (https://www.cityofws.org/).
