When Kelvin Sauvenell wandered off from school grounds while playing with other children, the school was quick to act, calling his mother to let her know and sending people to search before police arrived.
Sauvenell has special needs, causing his mother, Yenicer Cifuentes of Winston-Salem, to be anxious. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before Heath Evans found the boy at a nearby creek.
"God has a lot of angels around us, taking care of us,” Cifuentes told WFMY News 2. “I’m thankful to God that [Evans] was there.”
Evans, a parent of three children, was quick to help once he heard the boy had wandered off. He said he couldn’t imagine the panic Cifuentes was feeling while her son was missing, so he joined her and the pair searched the woods.
"Out of the corner of my eye, the boy was just sitting there, playing in the water,” Evans said, according to WFMY News 2.
Cifuentes said that school officials told her they tried to locate him quickly before getting police involved. ”I can't imagine what was going through his mind at that time,” she said.
Evans yelled with excitement after finding Sauvenell, so officers would know where they were and that the boy had been found.
The reunion between mother and child was something he'll always remember.
"[Sauvenell] ran up to her, wrapped his arms around her and gave her a big kiss on cheek,” Evans told WFMY News 2.
The incident has led Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to discuss making some changes. The school district is moving to have fencing installed, provided the school board approves the funding. Otherwise, the school and district will be reviewing existing safety and supervision policies to help prevent another such event.
