Students who took a field trip to the Carolina Classic Fair on Monday traveled to Winston-Salem under bright blue skies as the remnants of Hurricane Ian had passed through a few days earlier.

“It's a beautiful day,” Kyleigh Wallace, a Winston-Salem Baptist Christian school volunteer, told ABC 45. Wallace was a chaperone for the class from Kernersville Classical Conversations school. “It’s so good to get out in the sun instead of rain and gloomy, we're having such a great time.”

The trip offered a variety of fascinating things for the students to experience. For Joey Caires, it was one of the craftspeople. “I love how the guy carves wood,” Caires said. But since the weather allowed some water fun, “having fun and playing in the splash pool” was another bonus.

Students ate free popcorn, rode on the carousel and participated in a variety of educational activities during their visit.

“Overall, we have about a few thousand kids here from schools from Forsyth County, Guilford County and a few from beyond,” Carolina Classic Fair event and branding manager D.J. Hargrave said.

“We just really want to provide a safe environment with a little bit of a lesser crowd for the students to come and enjoy the school day,” Hargrave said.
