Week ending June 4: longest patent process for Winston-Salem inventors

Patent 5

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending June 4 in Winston-Salem was 1,443 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Rai Strategic Holdings, Inc. for a vaporizer related systems, methods, and apparatus. It was filed on June 18, 2018 before being approved on May 31, 2022.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were five patents granted for Winston-Salem inventors in the week ending June 4.
