Skyrocketing gas prices are affecting nearly 1,600 Forsyth County volunteers who regularly deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors.

The volunteers use their own vehicles and pay for their own gas to deliver the meals.

"Our volunteers are certainly impacted by that because they are essentially donating their vehicles and their gas, and so we are incredibly thankful for that," Senior Services President and CEO Lee Covington told WXII 12 News.

Covington said that the effects of rising gas prices is twofold, affecting both the volunteers delivering the meals and also the prices from participating food vendors.

The volunteers deliver hot meals up to five days a week and seem to be taking the gas prices in stride while continuing their volunteer work to benefit those who depend on Meals on Wheels for a free home-cooked meal, which could otherwise be hard to come by.

Covington called the volunteers the "lifeblood" of the program.
