Board of Education Wrap-Up 12-7-2021

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools issued the following announcement on December 8.

DECEMBER 8, 2021 - The WS/FCS Board of Education elected Deanna Kaplan as Board of Education Chair and re-elected Lida Calvert-Hayes as Vice-Chair at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night. Both will serve in these roles through 2022.

Kaplan was elected as an at-large representative to the board in 2018. Calvert-Hayes was appointed by the school board to fill a vacant seat in 2015. She was re-elected to represent District 2 in 2018. Per WS/FCS Board Bylaws, the four-year term for all members of the Board of Education expires in 2022. All members can run for re-election, should they choose.

In other action, the Board of Education approved spending $1.4 million in federal COVID relief money to start a pilot program that puts 20 mentors in four schools that have had issues with student behavior.

The program will start later this month and run for 10 months. Each school will identify 50 students who are exposed to violence or gang activity. A team of five mentors will be at each school. The mentors will receive training on such things as conflict resolution and anger management and be paid for their work.

In other action the board:

Renewed the contract with Panorama Education Inc.

Approved a contract with TNTP Inc. for professional development

Approved requests for new courses

Approved a contract with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for professional development

Approved a Studies Weekly Inquiry professional development program

Approved a contract with Profound Gentlemen

Approved Speech and Language Tele-Services

Approved an addendum to a contract with ProCare Therapy for a Speech-Language Pathologist
