HPU Students Celebrate Jewish Traditions at Hanukkah Dinner

Hanukkah

High Point University issued the following announcement on December 3.

HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 3, 2021 – High Point University’s Jewish students shared their faith and Hanukkah traditions with the HPU community during the 10th annual Hanukkah dinner on Dec. 1 at 1924 Prime, one of HPU’s fine-dining learning labs.

This year, Hanukkah began at sundown on Nov. 28 and concludes on Dec. 6. The university holds the Hanukkah dinner for the entire campus community every year and lights a menorah on campus.

Per tradition, students, faculty and staff in the HPU Hillel community read the story of Hanukkah, recite prayers in Hebrew, learn to play the dreidel and serve authentic Jewish food such as matzo ball soup, sufganiyot, which are jelly donuts, and potato latkes.

Students, faculty and staff in the HPU community joined in the festivities by enjoying authentic Jewish food, learning to play the dreidel and reading the story of Hanukkah.

“During dinner on the fourth night of Hanukkah, we lit four candles plus the shamash, the helper candle,” said Amy Epstein, HPU’s Jewish life coordinator. “We light one additional candle on each of the following nights to remember the miracle of the oil, which lasted eight nights when it was only expected to last one night. There are many stories tied to the story of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. We strive to bring light into the dark days of winter, and we want to make a better world to live in by shining our lights from within.”

Steph Stone, president of Hillel, has been a part of the student-led Jewish organization for all four years of her college experience.

“Hannukah at 1924 Prime is especially meaningful because it has become a special tradition that we are only be able to experience together during our years at High Point University,” said Stone, a senior from Short Hills, New Jersey. “It is amazing to see people from every corner come out for our Hannukah dinner on campus and enjoy themselves. Nothing makes me happier than to see the connections being made that Hillel has brought together.”

HPU’s Hillel will also create a menorah tonight out of hundreds of canned goods they will donate to the David Frazier Food Pantry at Jewish Family Services.
