NOVEMBER 5, 2021 – On Oct. 30, the Clemmons Go-Bots Robotics team won the Overall Champions Award at the district tournament held at Atkins Academic & Technology High School.

Teachers Stephen Davies and Josue Jean-Baptiste are the Robotics coaches at Clemmons Middle.

“Congratulations to the Clemmons Go-Bots and their coaches on being awarded Champions of the Forsyth County 10th Anniversary Robot Run!” said Vicky Wheeler, the Director of Career and Technical Education.

“I am so proud of their work for the presentations and the competition. All of our teams did a terrific job of applying their technical, critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills to the Cargo Challenge.”

“It’s been a challenging time during the pandemic and it was refreshing to see students in action!”

Teams from other Winston-Salem/Forsyth County middle schools also competed, and Superintendent Tricia McManus was there to cheer them on.

Davies provided some more information about the competition:

Robot 1“Clemmons were able to score 250 points on their Robot Performance run, earning the highest score of the 16 teams competing to win the Robot Performance award,” Davies said.

“Teams must build and program their robot to complete missions on the robot table.”

“Students are judged in four categories: Presentation, Robot Design, Core Values, and Robot Performance

“For the Presentation, students are asked to research a problem and come up with an innovative solution.”

“The Core Values are Gracious Professionalism, Inspiration, and Teamwork.”

“The Clemmons Middle team’s next competition will be in December at the Regional State Qualifier competition in Greensboro, where they will compete against other teams in North Carolina. The State Competition will be held in January.”

Two teams based at Wiley Magnet Middle – The Robonauts and The STEAMers – were among the other competitors. Betty Jo Moore is one of the coaches at Wiley.

Robots 68“Both teams did well,” Moore said. “The Robonauts received the Robot Design Award.”

“Students are excited to get back to in-person Robotics tournaments. Although there is always a lot of energy and excitement at the Robot Run, this year it seemed like there was a little more of both.”

“In addition, this was the 10th anniversary of the Robot Run. The next stop for the WS/FCS teams is the Regional Tournament.”

“Robotics is a great way to get students excited about coding and can be applied to real-world problems. In addition, robotics allows students to collaborate and to be creative.”
