Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools issued the following announcement on October 20.
OCTOBER 20, 2021 – On Friday October 15, Southwest Elementary students and staff participated in a Color Fun Run that served as the conclusion to the annual PTA-organized, homegrown direct donation Wild, Wild Southwest “Under the Sea” fundraiser week.
Our total at noon on Friday was $60,229.
The campaign kicked off on October 8 with three school-wide pep rallies. By Tuesday morning October 12th, the original $20,000 goal was met. PTA then “Doubled the Bubble” with a NEW goal of $40,000, only to be blown away as the school continued to exceed that amount, on the way to $50,000.
“Will Southwest meet the NEWEST goal of $50,000 by October 15?!” organizers asked themselves.
Southwest met that goal and kept going.
Our Wild, Wild Southwest campaign TRIPLED our original goal of $20,000 and made $60,229. Truly unbelievable! The largest fundraiser in the history of our school!
We were thrilled that over 70% of our student body participated in this homegrown PTA-sponsored annual campaign. Money raised goes directly back the school. This year, we are adding sun shades to our playgrounds, creating an outside classroom, and improving the auditorium sound system.
Sumo 23The Color Fun Run finale included a surprise visit by the Village of Clemmons Monster Dash monster, the West Forsyth drum line, a sumo wrestle between Assistant Principal Justin Marckel and PE teacher Matt Saldiveri and an ultimate face-off on a slime-covered slip-n-slide between Principal Summer Jackson and Assistant Principal Marckel.
During the campaign, students and staff members created decorations throughout our school for the “Under the Sea” theme, including our 50 State Challenge.
Anne Rudert, our Wild, Wild Southwest PTA Fundraising Chair, and Leslie Hege, PTA President, led the effort.
More than 1,350 people donated this year!
Our 5-year total is $191,000 raised. We will continue to take donations through October 31st.
