Winston-Salem & Forsyth County Schools issued the following announcement on September 3.
Good evening students, parents, and staff,
First, we again want to say thank you to parents, students and staff for your patience, your kindness and understanding as we have moved through the tragic events of the last 24 hours. These events directly impacted Mount Tabor but have also impacted all of our families and schools in some way. From extended transportation delays to feelings of sadness and fear. Thankfully, our district is full of kind, caring, wonderful people who’ve banded together to show their support.
As we begin to move forward, we know parents across the district are getting questions from our children. You may be seeing signs of anxiety and depression. We have compiled a list of accessible and easy to understand resources to help you. Please look on our homepage under headlines and click on the Traumatic Event Resources for WS/FCS Families (https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/121291
) headline. That link will take you to a valuable list of trusted, professional resources for parents during times like this. Remember, we also encourage you to utilize our school counselors as they are here to help.
As you may know, Mount Tabor High School is going to remain closed, and Mount Tabor activities have been cancelled, through the weekend. Students will return to school on Tuesday as Monday is a district holiday.
Also, we want to remind parents of the safety practices and protocols the district has in place. Every middle and high school has a School Resource Officer through our wonderful partners at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Kernersville Police Department. In the coming days, you will see extra officers across the district. All of our schools also have surveillance camera systems. Elementary and middle schools have new access control systems. Our security team has extensive security plans in place and every rumor or threat brought to our attention is investigated by law enforcement. Safety is our top priority.
We also remind parents and students to let law enforcement and school leaders know anytime you see something concerning. See something, know something, say something. Concerning rumors or posts on social media should be reported, not reposted. We also have a Parent Information Hotline (https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/
) and an anonymous Bully Patrol tip line/app (https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/113312
) on our homepage that can be used to report any incidents or information.
Again, thank you to our law enforcement partners with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Winston-Salem Police Department for all their remarkable work in doing all they can to keep our students and staff safe.
Thank you,
WS/FCS Communications
