High Point University issued the following announcement on July 19.
High Point, NC., July 19, 2021 – High Point University is celebrating another successful program and its students. HPU’s Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) Class of 2021 scored a perfect pass rate on the National Board of Certification (BOC) examination. High Point University’s 100% first time passing rate far surpassed the three-year aggregate national average of only 72.33%.
Graduates of the program attribute this accomplishment to their faculty mentors who helped them through a challenging year. The National Board exam tests the students’ medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and decision making to support evidence-based patient care.
“Going through any Athletic Training program can be a challenge,” says Dan Aube, who graduated from HPU’s program in May and is now an athletic training fellow at University of Kentucky. “There is a large amount of knowledge and clinical skills that are necessary to learn in such a short period of two years.”
Passing the BOC examination is a requirement to practice in the sports medicine field as a certified athletic trainer. Athletic trainers are highly qualified health care providers who specialize in providing emergency and acute care, orthopedic evaluation and diagnosis, and treatment and rehabilitation for physically active populations.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our athletic training alumni whose diligence and adaptability during a global pandemic paid off resulting in their ability to practice as athletic trainers,” says Dr. Jolene Henning, chair and associate professor of HPU’s Department of Athletic Training. “It illustrates the commitment of our team of faculty and clinical preceptors to mentor our AT students and challenge them to ensure quality patient care.”
“At High point University, I strongly feel that the core values that the staff held were not only to prepare us to pass the BOC, but to excel as clinicians and future leaders in the industry,” says Aube. “They pushed us to keep up with the latest evidence-based practice and held us to a higher standard.”
HPU’s Athletic Training Class of 2021 is a reflection of the university’s commitment to excellence in health care education. HPU announced earlier this year Dr. Racquel Ingram as founding chair of the Department of Nursing and Dr. Scott De Rossi as founding dean of the future School of Dental Medicine and Oral Health.
HPU’s Department of Athletic Training is housed in the Congdon School of Health Sciences. The MSAT program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
