The intersection of North Hawthorne Road and Northwest Blvd. in Winston-Salem will experience closures due to community painting events organized by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission. The events are scheduled for Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 13.

The first closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 5. North Hawthorne Road, between Runnymede Road and Glade Street, will be inaccessible. Artists and volunteers are set to paint from 8 a.m. to noon, with the road reopening at 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 6, allowing drying time for the paint.

The second event will close Northwest Blvd. between Reynolda Road and First Street starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 13. Similar to the previous event, artists will paint from 8 a.m. until noon. The road will then reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, April 14.

Access to Hanes Park and local residences will be maintained, though motorists are advised to anticipate travel delays in the area.

In 2023, the WS/FC Public Art Commission held an open call for artists in Winston-Salem to propose public art projects. The initiative aimed to assist local artists in building public art portfolios and enhance community spirit through art. The current project, created by local activists and artists Sarah Green and Bibi Dimmette Coyne, is one of the four selected.

Volunteers can register their interest in participating in the events through the provided online form.
