Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines announced on May 12 that residents who are 100 years of age and older will be recognized as part of the city’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The recognition aims to honor centenarians for their lives, experiences, and contributions, connecting local history with the nation’s milestone birthday. The event is intended to highlight these residents as some of Winston-Salem’s most treasured community members.

As part of the festivities, the names and photographs of participating centenarians will be displayed during the Independence Day celebration at Truist Stadium in partnership with the Winston-Salem Dash. Additionally, qualifying citizens will receive formal recognition at a City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, July 6, at 6:00 p.m., where Mayor Joines will present a special acknowledgment to the oldest living resident in Winston-Salem.

Residents aged 100 or older—or family members or caregivers submitting information on their behalf—are invited to complete a recognition form. Forms can be submitted online or requested by email or mail. All completed forms must be sent to the Mayor’s Office by Monday, June 1.

The City of Winston-Salem serves as a municipal government overseeing local public services and governance for its residents; it operates under a City Council with eight ward representatives and an elected mayor citywide. The council holds authority for enacting local laws, approving budgets, setting taxes, managing infrastructure such as water treatment plants capable of processing up to 91 million gallons daily, maintaining water mains and sewer lines, supporting economic development through business assistance programs—including those aimed at minority enterprises—and providing essential services within its North Carolina boundaries, according to the official website.

This initiative reflects what organizers describe as “the City of Winston-Salem’s dedication to honoring its community and the centenarian residents whose lives connect local history with the United States’ 250th birthday.”
