State officials have announced that due to the ongoing government shutdown, disruptions are expected for both the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

According to state guidance, funding for WIC administrative functions and benefits is projected to be available through November 15. However, there will not be funding for SNAP benefits or administrative functions as of November 1. Despite this, North Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) offices will remain open to receive and process applications and recertifications. Officials recommend that individuals continue to meet redetermination deadlines and submit necessary paperwork to avoid delays in receiving benefits when funding resumes.

“State and county agencies are proactively monitoring the situation and collaborating with community organizations to ensure that assistance is available.”

For those needing food or meals during the shutdown, several resources are available:
– The City of Winston-Salem provides a list of local food resources on its website at Food Resiliency | City of Winston-Salem, NC.
– Individuals can call 211 for information about available support.
– A map showing Forsyth County’s community resources is accessible online (Community Resources and Assets).
– Second Harvest offers additional information on its resource webpage (Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina).
– Older adults can contact Senior Services’ help line at 336.724.2040.

“State and county agencies are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with community organizations to provide assistance.”

Those seeking more details on where to access food or meals during the shutdown are encouraged to use these local resources.
