May is National Historic Preservation Month, a time dedicated to celebrating and promoting the preservation of historic places across the nation. In recognition of this month, the Forsyth County Historic Resource Commission collaborated with The Chronicle and Winston-Salem Writers to organize a middle school essay contest. The contest was open to students from WS/FC Schools.
Three students were recognized for their outstanding entries and received cash prizes. Riley Strain won first place, Boren M. Douglas secured second place, and Celeste Ward took third place. All participants in the contest were from Summit School.
The essays were evaluated by judges provided by each sponsor. The evaluation criteria included creativity, essay structure, grammar and punctuation, and theme adherence. Students could choose from three themes: interviewing a senior citizen about their school experiences compared to today’s; describing unique community features as if they were tour guides; or discussing something in their community they hope will remain for 50 years and its importance.
