Carolina University’s women’s soccer team lost 2-0 to Ave Maria University in an away game at Gyrene Field on Saturday. The Bruins, now 0-4-2 for the season, were unable to score despite a strong defensive effort.
Ave Maria took the lead early when Allie Burgess scored unassisted in the 17th minute. Carolina’s goalkeeper Waleska Gonzalez kept the margin close with four saves in the first half. In the second half, sophomore Alona Locklear took over in goal and added five more saves, but Claire Wrobleski extended Ave Maria’s lead to 2-0 with another unassisted goal in the 48th minute.
The Bruins managed two shots on target, both from Alondra Ramon, but Ave Maria keeper Avalena DeBolt stopped both attempts and secured a shutout.
Carolina played much of the second half shorthanded after receiving a red card in the 63rd minute.
Head Coach Boo Tesh commented: “We showed a lot of grit today. Coming off the draw at Warner, our players responded with the right mentality and competed for the full 90 minutes. We are continuing to build chemistry and I am encouraged by the fight this group is showing.”
The Bruins are scheduled to play their next match against West Virginia Tech on Friday, September 12 at 7 p.m., which will also be Senior Night.
