Carolina University Women’s Soccer was defeated 2-1 by Spartanburg Methodist College on Wednesday in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Bruins started the match strongly, registering more shots than their opponents in the first half, but fell behind early when Kamari Johnson scored for Spartanburg Methodist in the fifth minute.
Despite Carolina University’s efforts to equalize and forcing several saves from goalkeeper Ava Wilson, they were unable to score before halftime. In the second half, Caroline Taylor doubled the lead for Spartanburg Methodist in the 63rd minute. Carolina responded late in the game when sophomore forward Natalie Puskar scored off an assist from Alondra Ramon in the 79th minute. The Bruins continued to press but were denied by Wilson again in the closing minutes.
Carolina finished with a total of 14 shots compared to Spartanburg Methodist’s 12 and had eight shots on goal versus five for their opponents. However, Spartanburg Methodist converted their opportunities efficiently.
Head Coach Boo Tesh commented on his team’s performance: “I’m really proud of how our girls responded after going down 2-0,” Coach said. “We created opportunities, and Natalie’s goal showed the effort and belief this group has. These are the types of battles that will make us stronger as the season goes on.”
With this result, Carolina University falls to 0-2-0 for the season. The team will play its home opener against University of Rio Grande (OH.) at Truist Sports Park on Friday, August 29 at 4:00 p.m.
