The Carolina University Bruins softball team began its participation in the Spring Space Coast Games on March 2 at the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Florida. The team split its opening day games, securing an 8-0 win against Bethel (Ind.) before losing 5-1 to Huntington (Ind.).
Following these results, the Bruins now hold a 5-5 record for the season and are scheduled to continue tournament play on Tuesday with games against Mount Marty at 10:00 a.m. and Mount Vernon Nazarene at 12:15 p.m.
Head Coach Jay Johnson commented on the team’s approach to the week, stating, “Our focus this week is to treat this trip like a championship week. We came down here to compete, grow, and represent Carolina University the right way. I was proud of how we responded in the first game, and we’ll continue to clean things up and get better as the week progresses.”
In their first game of the day, Carolina scored three runs in the opening inning and continued to add runs throughout, finishing with an eight-run shutout over Bethel. Nathaly Ochoa led offensively by going three-for-three with three runs scored, one RBI, and a stolen base. Jocelyn DeMoss contributed two hits and an RBI; Emma-Lea Cabral drove in three runs with two hits; Emily Wilson added two hits including a double and an RBI. The team recorded a total of twelve hits.
Pitcher Anni Bergmeier delivered a complete-game shutout over six innings, allowing only three hits and no runs while walking three batters. The defense supported her effort by playing error-free behind her.
In their second contest against Huntington, Carolina took an early lead with a sacrifice fly from Emma-Lea Cabral that brought home Nathaly Ochoa. However, Huntington answered back quickly with two runs in their half of the first inning and continued adding single runs in subsequent innings for a final score of 5-1.
Anni Bergmeier had another strong performance at bat with three hits; Nathaly Ochoa also collected two hits. Pitcher Madison Hamilton threw six innings but allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Huntington’s Kinzie Mollenkop pitched a complete game for her team, striking out seven Bruins hitters while giving up just one run.
Carolina committed three errors defensively during this matchup.
The Bruins will seek improvement as they continue play at the tournament on Tuesday morning.
